AI — Eatables Age

For so many days one idea has been on my mind. I felt that this may be useful for startups. So, I want to write that here. As the name of the story says, I want to find out the age of any eatable by scanning through a mobile app.

Before implementing this idea, I felt that finding the age of an eatable is difficult without special hardware. So, to test MVP (Minimum viable product) I thought of implementing a small app, which should capture a person’s picture, and then it should display the person’s age. Finding the age should use machine learning algorithms.

Once the MVP idea is successful, the app can be extended to another level. That is capturing eatables and finding their age. Normal mobile cameras can capture images in RGB (Red Green Blue) format. But with RGB we cannot identify the age/freshness. This can be done with hyperspectral imaging. But mobile phones don’t have the capability to generate hyperspectral images. Then, to do that, separate hardware has to be built and it has to be externally attached to the mobile. Where more cost is involved. If this is successful, and if the device is small. The device can be incorporated into mobile phones. Nowadays we can see there are no extra features from the upgraded version mobiles, so, these devices can be incorporated into mobile or can be sold to mobile manufacturing companies.

As per my research, I was able to find one product which is measuring the age of vegetables and fruits. But this device has to be attached to the vegetable/fruit and needs to be pressed towards it to find the freshness of that. But if this is done for each and every eatable in a warehouse, it may take years to find the age of each item in the warehouse. So, this device should not touch the item, without touching it device has to identify the age/freshness of an eatable item.

Let’s take an example of a cake store, where we cannot attach any device to the cake because the cake will spoil. So, take a hyperspectral image of a cake then find the age/freshness of the cake. If the cake is within the limits, then we can purchase or else need not buy it.
